Hotchkiss Big Man Moving Up a Grade

The Hotchkiss School’s Mike Tobey only just arrived at the Connecticut prep school last month, but already the six-foot-eleven big man is making some major waves.

After turning in a great summer with the New York Gauchos, Tobey has continued to impress this fall during his new school’s open gyms.

The New York native had scholarship offers on the table from Virginia, Pittsburgh, Miami, Xavier, Maryland, and Northwestern by the beginning of October and was quickly becoming one of the fastest rising post prospects in the class of 2013.

However, things changed last week when Tobey decided to reclassify to the class of 2012.

Reclassification is very common in New England prep schools but in almost every case the decision is based on getting the prospect an extra year of development, whether it be physical, social, or academic.

While Tobey’s decision is incredibly rare in these parts it’s understandable given his high academic pedigree and current level of recruitment.

“He’s six-eleven and still growing,” said Hotchkiss head coach Fred Benjamin.  “He just turned 16 this month and coaches see the tremendous upside he has with great hands, great touch, and his work ethic.”

Benjamin says that the reclassification hasn’t deterred any of the schools pursuing his big man and that virtually every offer is still on the table.
