Hoophall Classic – Sunday Recap

Sunday was a day with a distinct prep school flavor at the Hoophall Classic as a number of New England’s premier prep school programs were in action.  Here’s a rundown:  

Tilton School 71  Vermont Academy 67

In a game that looked as if the Rams were about to run away with a lopsided victory, Vermont Academy came back with an inspired second half run to make it close down the stretch.  Wayne Selden came up with a timely baseline drive, spinning to the rim to elude the secondary defender, to score what would ultimately be the go-ahead bucket with 47 seconds to play.  Selden finished with 24 points and 7 rebounds to secure MVP honors while Chester Victor stepped up to provide a huge spark for the Rams.  The post-graduate would go off for 26 points while connecting from deep as well as off the dribble.  Rich Williams, who is expected to announce his college decision on Monday, was the biggest spark plug for Vermont, finishing with 19 points and 9 rebounds.  Daquein McNeil continued to be the team’s primary playmaker in the backcourt, finishing with 16 points, while Marcel White had one of his better outings to date as well.  

Brewster Academy 88  South Kent School 55

South Kent came into this game knowing they were fighting an uphill battle having to play without senior point guard Shane Rector.  Playing with a point guard by committee approach, the Cardinals fought valiantly for most of the first half before Chris McCullough was able to get Brewster going with some incredible displays of athleticism in the open floor.  McCullough would finish with 21 points on 8-12 shooting but it would be Martinez Harrison who would take home MVP honors with 12 points, 8 assists, and 5 steals.  Harrison was a blur creating off his dribble and equally effective on the defensive end of the floor.  Kevin Zabo and Elijah Macon were also productive with 16 and 12 points respectively.  Kamall Richards scored a team high 14 points for South Kent while Reggie Agbeko would continue to be a man among boys on the glass with 16 rebounds.  

Huntington Prep 55  New Hampton 47

In what was the most competitive game of the day, Huntington and New Hampton were locked in a one possession game heading into the final minute of play.  The Huskies had to overcome playing without Noah Vonleh for almost half of the game as he was limited by foul trouble throughout the entire 32 minutes before ultimately fouling out.  Tory Miller stepped up with a big performance and finished with a double-double of ten points and ten rebounds while Travis Jorgenson did a nice job of running the show at the point with 14 points.  Andrew Wiggins, the nation’s number one ranked player, took home MVP honors with 19 points and 10 rebounds while former Cheshire Academy guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes added 12.  

Worcester Academy 69  Wilbraham & Monson 62

A hard fought game between two of the more talented teams in Class AA provided an exciting conclusion to Sunday’s action.  It was back and forth action with both teams making plays in the first half and that continued in the second, until Brewster got a couple of pivotal scores to seal the deal in the final moments.  Matt Mobley earned MVP honors for Worcester Academy with 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists while Rene Castro chipped in with 15 of his own.  Goodluck Okonoboh secured the double-double for Wilbraham & Monson with 11 points and 10 rebounds while also showing a passing element to his low post game while Kerem Kanter was a second half spark to the W&M offense.
