Hoop Mountain Prep Classic Day 1 Recap
The Hoop Mountain Prep Classic tipped off Friday night with four exciting games at St. Andrew’s School in Barrington, Rhode Island. A number of top local prospects stood out, serving a fitting appetizer for what is expected to be a full action of basketball.
Coastal Academy 53 Marianapolis Prep 44
Marianapolis Prep relied on the three-point shooting of sophomore Eric Aguanno and 14 points from Eric Long to keep this one close, but in the end Coastal Academy’s athletic guards and wings proved too much to overcome. Coastal guard Kevin Little from 4-5 from behind the three point line to score 23 points in the victory.
Cushing Academy 87 Cheshire Academy 70
Cheshire took a slim 34-33 lead into halftime after a back and forth first 18 minutes, but Jalen Adams came out intent to assert himself to start the second, scoring 10 points in the first four minutes of the half. He finished with a game high 28 points and 6 assists.
St. Bonaventure bound swingman Idris Taqqee came up with the momentum swinging play when he punctuated a Cushing break with a monstrous dunk over an oncoming defender, only to follow that up with a defensive steal and subsequent three-pointer. He finished with 20 points. Kaleb Joseph chipped in with 12.
Recent Binghamton pledge Wilfredo Rodriguez led Cheshire with 21 points and 12 rebounds as he was able to take advantage of an undersized Cushing front line, scoring 10 points on second chance buckets while adding a couple of deep threes. Sophomore sensation Tyree Weston added 16 points in the loss.
South Kent 78 Worcester Academy 75
A back and forth dog fight throughout all 40 minutes so neither team able to extend a lead beyond 7 points. Matt Cimino led Worcester with 21, once again showing his ability to stretch the floor and knocking down the three ball. Another sophomore sensation, Saul Phiri, chipped in with 15 points for Worcester.
The backcourt continued to be the story for South Kent. Arell Hennings and Schadrac Casimir both impressed offensively, finishing with 16 and 20 points respectively. Romello Walker also made notable contributions including an explosive first half dunk.
Ultimately, the game came down to the very last possession with timely three-pointers from Devon Williams and Phiri keeping Worcester within striking distance until the very last second had wound off the clock just after they came up shot on a potential game tying three-pointer.
Notre Dame Prep 74 Bill Crothers 60
In the day one finale, Notre Dame Prep hosted the Bill Crothers School from Ontario in what was a classic tale of two very different havles. Crothers battled Prep even throughout the first half, heading into the locker room trailing only 32-21 thanks to the contributions of Trae Bell Haynes. The point guard did a little bit of everything, showing a crafty ability to get to the basket, hitting from downtown, and running the offense to perfection.
Notre Dame Prep shook off their shooting woes in the second half as Jarvis Garrett took over the game, scoring 18 second half points including 5 three-pointers. West Virginia bound guard Daxter Miles chipped in with some playmaking of his own while C.J. Vaughn finished with 16 points.
