Gunville Accepts Division II Scholarship; Will Not Prep

Plans have changed for Jimmy Gunville!  After having originally committing to attend the Tilton School as a post-graduate the sharp-shooting guard has instead decided to accept a scholarship offer from Mercy College and their first year head coach Tony Staffiere.

Gunville is best known for his shooting prowess from behind the three-point stripe.  During the fall AAU season he had back to back games with 10 or more three-pointers.   He also knocked down 12 three-pointers during one game this season while starring for Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School.

Apparently a big part of his decision to skip his post-graduate year was because of a previous standing relationship with Coach Staffiere, who was just hired in June.  Gunville and Staffiere first came into contact five years ago at the famous Five Star Basketball Camp and have assumingly kept in touch since.  Additionally, Staffiere has New England ties of his own having served as the head women’s coach at Northern Essex Community College and the assistant athletic director at Regis College in previous years.

"Jimmy can shoot it from anywhere on the floor and his high basketball IQ will make him a valuable asset for us this season," said Staffiere according to an athletic department press release.  "He has the ability to stretch a defense out.  Driving lanes get wider and our wings should have more options when penetrating to the basket."

Gunville is joined by Luka Trekman in the Mavericks recruiting class.  Trekman is a versatile 6’5 player who recently graduated from the Masters School in Connecticut.  Trekman originally hails from Slovenia and the international influences are easily viewable in his game.  At 6’5 he handles and passes the ball like a guard and should be an excellent fit with Gunville thanks to his ability to penetrate and kick to shooters.

"Luka will be a very versatile player with his ability to play the point at 6-foot-5," said Staffiere.  "He possesses tremendous skill to shoot the basketball beyond the three-point line and to find the open man with precision."

Mercy College plays in the East Coast Conference and typically plays in New England at least twice a year when they visit conference rivals New Haven and Bridgeport.
