Grady Gives Davidson an Early Steal in ‘17
Davidson came to New England and landed a major steal on Monday when Northfield Mount Hermon junior Kellan Grady committed to the Wildcats.
In reality, it was actually Grady who went south to them, after visiting their campus this weekend and then opting to give his word to head coach Bob McKillop less than 36 hours later.
“The weekend went great,” he told the New England Recruiting Report. “I got to interact with the whole team and got a good grasp of what Davidson is going to be like and it’s everything I want and more.”
Grady grew up dreaming of playing for Davidson, and so between that and the college’s strong academic reputation the Wildcats were always considered to be the favorites.
“I really wanted to play for Bob McKillop and in his motion offense, which I think I can thrive in,” Grady said. “I think I have a great opportunity to play significant minutes for all four years and that’s really my goal. I think I can achieve everything I want there.”
While the comparisons to Steph Curry are both inappropriate and unfair, there’s no denying that Grady has a chance to make a major impact for the Wildcats and may even be in position to start as a freshman.
Not surprisingly, the Wildcats had to overcome major competition in order to land his commitment as he scored scholarship offers in the Big Ten and Big East over the course of the last few months and also had programs like Villanova and North Carolina actively recruiting him and tracking his progress.
That surge in his recruitment is a reflection of his tremendously successful first year in the prep ranks in which he not only made a smooth transition to the point guard position but also became a much improved shooter from the three-point line and proved he could stuff all columns of the stat sheet.
The culmination of that was a NEPSAC AAA championship in March, just one year after he helped lead Catholic Memorial to a state championship in the MIAA.
“The next goal is to repeat in the NEPSAC and try to win the national championship next year,” Grady said.
On the grassroots circuit, Grady has been a longtime product of the New England Playaz, where he first made a name for himself on the national stage.
