Gilliam Lands in America East

Chauncey Gilliam’s recruitment has been a long and windy road.  It was almost 18 months ago that Gilliam thought the process was behind him when he committed to the University of Albany during his senior season at Leap Academy in New Jersey.  Little did he know that was just the beginning.

Gilliam ended up de-committing from Albany and heading to Brewster Academy for a post-graduate year, where he has had the opportunity to be evaluated by hundreds of college coaches.  His recruitment ended up dragging out the entire season as he just recently made his final decision.

Gilliam is an extraordinary athlete.  Although he stands at just 6’3” he plays bigger than his size because of his incredible leaping ability.  He also possesses a very strong body that allows him to elevate through contact when taking up off of both feet.  It is that combination of hang time and power that makes him such a special finisher.  Not only is he able to delight the crowd when uncontested at the rim, but he is also likely to dunk on challenging defenders and take them into the rim with the ball.

When it was all said and done, Gilliam had a choice between UMBC, High Point, and Maryland-Eastern Shore.  In UMBC, he selects the school that just went to their first ever NCAA tournament after winning the America East regular season and conference tournament championships.

Gilliam should be a good fit in their up-tempo system as he will not only thrive in the open floor but also be a valuable presence on the defensive end of the floor and on both backboards.
