Gibson Lands in the Ivy League
Over the years, New England has been a hotbed for high school graduates looking for another year for more exposure and to potentially turn their production into a Division 1 offer. Yesterday, Winchendon’s Quinn Gibson became the next example of this by committing to Cornell.
After a dominant four-year career in South Jersey, Gibson decided to enroll at the Winchendon School as a postgraduate, and his stock has continued to rise.
Gibson’s a 6’5” wing that thrives at getting downhill and finishing with force around the rim. He can throw down explosive dunks and also be crafty to finish under and around defenders.
Defensively, he has a solid frame and size while moving well laterally to keep his opponents in front of him. He has a good IQ that makes him more of a threat on both sides of the ball, especially to make strong reads as a defender in screen and roll scenarios.
During his time at Cherry Hill West High School in South Jersey, just outside of Philadelphia, he was a varsity player since he was a freshman. He averaged 10.2 points during his freshman year and then 13.3 as a sophomore, including 48 three-pointers.
As a junior, he bolstered that number up to 21 points and maintained that momentum throughout his Senior year, finishing with 1,281 points during his time there.
Academics have also played a big role in his life, helping fuel his decision to commit to Cornell next year.
When asked about his decision, Gibson said, “Cornell is the perfect balance for me to achieve my dream of playing Division 1 basketball, while also getting the best academic situation possible.”
He has maintained high honors at the Winchendon School, and he will look to flourish both on and off the court next year as well. Gibson says he loves “the Coaching staff and play style of Cornell,” and he will look to make a strong impact as soon as he gets there.
As he looks to the next level, he will have to continue to grow his skill set offensively around the perimeter. He has shown a glimpse of shooting ability, and if he can become more confident shooting outside the arc, it would only make him more of an offensive threat in the Ivy League.
Gibson took a moment to show thanks to his support system: “I’m thankful for my family, all my coaches and teammates that helped get me here.” It is important to look back and appreciate and remember all the people who have made sacrifices for you.
His time at Winchendon is not done yet, as he will finish up his season with an impending playoff run before heading to Ithaca, New York, this summer and starting the new chapter in his basketball and academic journey.
