Garrett is a Ram
It was just about a month ago that Notre Dame Prep point guard Jarvis Garrett was set to decide between Marquette and Rhode Island, only to delay his decision after a slew of other high-major programs began to express interest following his performance at the National Prep School Invitational.
While it certainly didn’t appear this way at the time, that delay was exactly the stroke of luck that Rhode Island needed, as they continued to aggressively pursue the scoring guard and show their unwavering commitment to him.
“[Rhode Island assistant coach] Preston Murphy really did a great job,” Notre Dame Prep head coach Ryan Hurd said. “They developed a close relationship and he made him understand what a big opportunity there was for him at Rhode Island.”
Garrett is the first high school prospect to commit to Rams’ head coach Danny Hurley in the 2015 class and joins a talented young core that includes freshmen E.C. Matthews and Hassan Martin.
Matthews recently earned A10 Rookie of the Week honors for the fourth consecutive time. The six-foot-four guard should make the perfect compliment for the five-foot-ten Garrett, since both are capable of playing on or off the ball.
Garrett had a huge final season at Notre Dame Prep, establishing himself as one of the top lead guards in the prep ranks and emerging as arguably the best available point guard in the country in recent weeks.
The Rams are landing a lead guard who shoots the ball very well from long-range, is equally good with his pull-up, and plenty capable of getting himself into the paint. While he was forced to take-on more of a scorer’s role this season, he’s also plenty capable of distributing the ball, and is also especially adept in ball-screen action because of his versatility.
