Four 2024’s Announce Their College Plans

Over the past few weeks, we saw a few notable New Englanders decide where they will continue their basketball careers next year. Timmy Mulvey, Brian Cloonan, Max Alberts, and Dan Civello all recently announced their commitments (pending admission) to compete at the NCAA Division III level for the 2024-25 season. Let's take a look at where they're headed.

This past weekend, Brooks School/Middlesex Magic 2024 point guard Timmy Mulvey made his commitment to play at Babson College in the NEWMAC conference at the NCAA Division III level. He was one of eight juniors selected to the All-NEPSAC Class-B First Team for his performance throughout last season. He joins a program that has seen recent success, as Babson upset 21st-nationally ranked WPI to win the NEWMAC Tournament Championship last year, earning a bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament.

Last week, Needham HS/Middlesex Magic 2024 guard Brian Cloonan shared his commitment to Claremont-McKenna College to compete for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the SCIAC conference, which saw two members earn bids to the 2023 Division III NCAA Tournament (Cal Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer). Cloonan has earned plenty of recognition throughout his career with Needham and the Magic, including MVP honors at the Westwood Tournament last season.

Earlier last month, Berkshire School 2024 guard/forward Max Alberts committed to Middlebury College to compete in the NESCAC conference, joining father Rob who serves as Assistant Coach in a program that has seen great success over the past year. Despite losing their first round contest in the NESCAC Tournament to Tufts in double overtime, they still earned the 16th overall rank in the country, earning an at-large bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament and winning their first round game. Middlebury’s Alex Sobel earned D3Hoops Player of the Year and now transfers to Sacred Heart to compete at the Division I level for this upcoming season.

Last but not least, another NESCAC commitment came at the beginning of last month from Boston College HS/Rise Above Basketball 2024 center Dan Civello who announced his commitment to join Colby College. The 6’10” big has attracted lots of attention, earning numerous standout recognitions for his performance at showcases, such as the HoopGroup Atlantic City Jam Fest. While the Mules fell short last year, the NESCAC as a whole saw four teams earn bids to the 2023 Division III NCAA Tournament, including Hamilton, Middlebury, Tufts, and Williams, all of whom won their first round game before falling in the second round.

It is safe to say that the aforementioned schools are getting some very talented players, but New England basketball never stops producing for the NCAA level. This weekend, the next batch of college prospects in the region will be on full display at the Frosh/Soph Elite 75 showcase. The event will be taking place over the course of two days, the North edition in Hanover, MA on Friday, September 8th at 6:00 PM, and the South edition in Hamden, CT on Sunday, September 10th at 12:30 PM. Though Friday is sold out, registration for Sunday’s showcase is still open. Sign up now before it's too late!
