EYBL - Saturday Recap
BABC vs Arkansas Wings 65-44
In a game that was decided early, BABC was able to get contributions from several players using their large bench. Tyler Nelson and Terance Mann were the difference in the first half contributing 15 and 8 points respectively. Equally as impressive, neither player missed a shot from the field or the free throw line (Nelson 5-5 FG, 3-3 3FG, 2-2 FT) and (Mann 4-4 FG).
With a 34-13 half time lead, the trio of Nelson, Mann and Bonzie Colson helped keep the Wings at bay throughout the second half. Mann continued his improved play with an efficient 17 points and 10 rebounds all while being a menace at the top of the BABC press. The Wings also were unable to have an answer for Colson, who ended with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. Bruce Brown made the most out of his extended minutes filling up the stat sheet with 6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.
BABC vs Athlete's First 53-51
Fresh off the plane, Johnny Joseph made an immediate impact by controlling the tempo on offense (8 points, 3 assists) and speeding up Athlete's First against the vaunted BABC press (5 steals). However with AF keying on Tyler Nelson, the story of the game became the offensive display by Bonzie Colson. In similar fashion to BABC alum Georges Niang, Colson scores in unconventional ways that can only be appreciated watching him over a several game span. His 21 points came on only 13 shots and featured a variety of moves from the low, mid and high posts.
Malik James and Bob Martin Jr. came off the bench to give BABC a nice boost throughout. James played both alongside of as well as in lieu of Joseph contributing 5 assists but also tough defense against the AF guards. Martin brought his usual energy to the floor giving BABC extra possessions with 5 offensive rebounds (7 rebounds overall).
Expressions Elite vs Jackson Tigers 81-74
The buzz throughout the morning at Boo Williams was the shooting display put on by Expressions, and in particular Aaron Falzon. The 6'7 Northfield Mount Hermon Hogger had high-major coaches searching their packets in the first half scoring 17 points, including 5 threes from deep behind the arc. Abdul-Malik Abu (2), Jared Wilson Frame (2) and Dmitri Floras (1) each added to the Expressions total of an incredible 10 threes in the first 16 minutes of play.
The second half became perfect example of a team beating an individual. 34 points from the #4 ranked player in the ESPN 25, Malik Newman of the Jackson Tigers, was not enough to overcome all five Expressions starters who reached double figures. The Expressions defense forced Newman into tough, contested shots and made him earn his points on 27 field goal attempts. Idris Taqqee impacted the game without scoring a point, both with his defense on Newman as well as creating extra possessions with offensive rebounds and steals.
Expressions Elite vs Alabama Challenge 67-54
The Expressions train continued to roll on Saturday evening knocking off Alabama Challenge behind another strong team effort. The tandem of Abdul-Malik Abu (28 points, 10 rebounds) and Jarred Terrell (13 points, 9 rebounds) drew a following of high-major coaches throughout the weekend. Both players separated themselves with their physical presence punishing defenders at the rim while showing an ability to knock down perimeter jump shots.
Once again Expressions Coach Tyron Boswell was unable to keep Idris Taqqee on the bench because of his ability to contribute without the ball in his hands. Tabbed as the "ultimate glue guy," the Cushing Academy product grabbed 8 rebounds (6 offensive) while chipping in 6 points and again stellar defense. Aaron Falzon, Dimitri Floras, Jared Wilson-Frame all contributed on both ends of the floor helping keep Expressions undefeated.
