Estrella’s Rise Takes Him to the SEC Next
Brewster Academy & Middlesex Magic big man JP Estrella just announced his commitment to Tennessee live on 247Sports.
He was a prototypical “late bloomer”, going from 6’3 as a freshman all the way up to his current height of 6’11. The growth paid major dividends in his game with the skill base he already built up.
Estrella helped lead South Portland HS to their first state title in 30 years. Estrella had 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 blocks in the championship win over Oxford Hills, while also averaging 20.2 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 4.1 blocks during the regular season.
His first experience on a shoe circuit was a smooth one. He proved to be one of the top prospects in the Under Armour Association, being a crucial piece on a Middlesex team that won the UAA Spring Championship. Estrella’s standout play earned him invites to the UA Future 60 and Elite 24 events.
Next up for Estrella will be playing his senior season at Brewster Academy. He will be joining a loaded team in NEPSAC AAA with other high major prospects like Reid Ducharme, Taylor Bowen, Carey Booth, and Aaron Clark.
“JP Estrella is one of the best players and highest prospects in Middlesex Magic history, said Middlesex Magic head coach Michael Crotty. His rise from unknown to a top 20 ranked player in the country is a testament to his work ethic and desire to buy into the Magic team culture. He is remarkably athletic, skilled, can score in the post over each shoulder. JP has the ability to face-up and drive the ball as well as space the floor from long-range. Defensively he has great instincts and footwork, making him capable of switching, hedging, and rim protecting.”
“Above and beyond his talent and skill though, it is his unwavering work ethic and constant ability to add layers to his game that make him such a high level prospect at the college level and beyond. Throughout this season, JP was happiest for the success of his teammates more than himself. This is the quality that I believe separates him as such an amazing leader and teammate. We are so excited to see him play at Tennessee. We believe after a year with Coach Smith and Brewster he will be ready to make a National impact as a freshman!”
Estrella becomes the sixth player in Brewster’s 2023 class to commit to a Division One program.
