Eastern Connecticut Welcomes Two Talented Local Freshmen
In order to win at the division III level you need to have scholarship level talents. Well Eastern Connecticut Head Coach Bill Geitner has added two such talents to his roster for the upcoming season.
Courtney Simmons, who was widely considered a future division I player during his career at Xavier High School, will suit up for the Warriors next year as will Broderick Sawyer, a big man who graduated from McMahon High School after starring at the St. Luke’s School in previous seasons.
Simmons has been a main staple of the Xavier High School team for the last three years. The talented combo-guard has a diverse skill set that allows him to shoot the ball with deep range or attack the basket and finish above the rim. His addition is a huge one for Geitner’s program as he could be an early favorite for the Freshman of the Year Award in the Little East.
Sawyer is a 6’6” power forward who was flying a little under the radar because he was unable to play during the high school season this year after completing his four years of eligibility at St. Luke’s a year earlier. At St. Luke’s Sawyer was one of the important pieces on a team that advanced to the finals of the NEPSAC Class “D” Tournament two years ago. At Eastern he should be able to make an immediate impact with his ability to rebound the ball and score with his back to the basket.
Simmons and Sawyer join Edwin Ortiz, a rising sophomore who previously attended East Catholic High School, to give the Warriors a talented young nucleus that appears poised for big things in the upcoming years.
