Diaz Coming Home; Signs with UMass Lowell
UMass Lowell has landed a talented wing player with some local roots as Romeo Diaz recently signed a National Letter of Intent to join the River Hawks.
Diaz starred during his three year career at nearby Methuen High School, especially in his senior year when he averaged 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals per game en route to earning Merrimack Valley Conference All-Star honors. He also had one of the best individual games the MIAA has seen in recent years when he scored 51 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, and handed out 11 assists in a 98-96 triple overtime win over Dracut.
Following his graduation, Diaz headed to Mississippi Elite Christian Academy for a post-graduate year.
He should be an ideal fit in head coach Greg Herenda’s up-tempo system as Metheun has the size, athleticism, and length to thrive in the open court.
“Romeo is exactly the kind of student-athlete I want to represent our program,” Herenda said. “He is a local product with a huge upside. He is very athletic and can score the ball. On top of that he’s a great kid.”
“Romeo was one of the first recruits I met when I got the job here, and I am very happy that everything worked out,” Herenda added. “He will fit right into our pressing and running system exceptionally well.”
Beyond his ability to thrive in transition, Diaz has a versatile game and is capable of putting points on the board in a number of ways and is also a good defender and rebounder.
“I feel very good because UMass Lowell is close to home and my family and friends can see me play,” said Diaz. “It is a very good school that has an excellent business program that will help me get a degree.”
“UMass Lowell is a pressing and running team and that style is the way I wanted to play in college,” he continued. “I feel it is a perfect fit for my game.”
Diaz will be joining another Massachusetts native in Boston’s Scotty Tavares in the River Hawks incoming freshmen class.
