Deerfield Forward Heading to Patriot League
Deerfield Academy forward Kyle Kager made a verbal commitment to American University earlier this week according to Rivals’ Eric Bossi.
Kager and his father traveled to Washington D.C. for an unofficial visit to American’s campus on Monday and ended up committing immediately afterward.
“I wanted to sign early in November and couldn’t ask for a better fit and better program,” Kager told Bossi. “It worked out really well.”
Kager is originally from Flower Mound, Texas but first arrived in New England as a sophomore at Deerfield Academy and has been one of the pillars of the program ever since.
Although he was originally planning on taking a few official visits this fall, Kager had already visited several campuses unofficially within the last year.
“After visiting the campus and seeing the entire campus it’s really a special place,” he said. “They have great coaches and have a great training program.”
The combination of quality academics and athletics also figured to be an important factor for Kager, coming from a top notch academic school like Deerfield and moving on to one of the best academic leagues in the country in the Patriot League. Basketball wise American is only two years removed from a trip to the NCAA tournament and has an ambitious schedule on the horizon with games against Maryland, Florida, and West Virginia.
Rivals reports that Kager also held offers from Holy Cross, Lehigh, and Furman with future trips scheduled to Bradley and Providence.
A six-foot-seven forward who is long, skilled, and athletic, Kager’s best basketball is still in front of him. He shoots the ball very well to the three-point line, has good bounce around the rim, and is already a very good player who only projects to keep improving.
