D3 Commitment Catch-Up (March 2024)

During these busy past couple of months, several local prospects announced their commitments to play Division III basketball for the next stage of their careers…

Suffield High School/CT Takeover 6’4” guard Michael Coggins recently announced his commitment to Keene State. He has impressed for some time now, earning CHSCA All-State CIAC Division 5 honors following his sophomore year. He continued his success throughout the following year as a junior, scoring 34 points in a title game for CT Takeover in the fall and dropping 40 for Suffield High School in January. After scoring his 1,000th point at the end of the season, he once again earned CHSCA All-State CIAC Division 5 honors. Currently ranked 34th in the state of Connecticut, he became Suffield High School’s all-time leading scorer, announcing his commitment to Keene State soon after.

Tabor Academy/Rise Above Basketball 6’4” shooting guard Logan Murphy recently announced that he would be staying in the Boston area to take his talents to Babson for the next chapter of his career. Currently ranked 33rd in the state of Massachusetts, he has had a very successful season in his first year of NEPSAC basketball. Contributing to a big win over ISL competitor Brooks, he scored 19 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. It will be exciting to track Murphy’s basketball career over the next few years.

Westwood High School/ASA Select 6’2” wing Andy Weeman recently shared that he would be staying home in the Boston area, announcing his commitment to Wentworth Institute of Technology. He stood out at the Elite 75 College Showcase this past summer, noted by our scouts as being “strong with the ball, allowing him to initiate offense around the mid-post,” and as a vocal defensive leader with a strong stance. It will be interesting to see how he makes the transition to the college level at Wentworth.

Catholic Memorial/Middlesex Magic guard Ryan Higgins recently announced his commitment to Roger Williams University. Higgins has been on our radar for some time, as he was a standout at the All Academic Basketball Showcase, knocking down spot-up jumpers, floaters, and layups off of smart cuts. He had a successful junior year the following school season, noted by our scouts as providing a “spark during key moments” with his “ability to space the floor from long-range.” He continued his success this past summer, standing out at the Elite 75 College Showcase. Our scouts once again noted his consistency from deep, as well as his quickness and ability to rebound above his size. He has seen success with Catholic Memorial this past year, finishing the regular season at 17-5. It will be fun to watch him compete for RWU over the next few years.

Watertown High School (MA)/ASA Select guard Jeffrey Herbin recently announced his commitment to Regis College, staying in the Boston area for the next chapter of his career. He was a standout performer at the Elite 75 College Showcase, demonstrating his efficiency from mid-range and deep off of pull-ups and step-backs, as well as his ability to finish acrobatically at the basket and with a soft touch on floaters over bigs. Our scouts also noted his quickness in transition, aggressive on-ball defense, effective soft floater game, and shifty handles during his E75 showing. He has continued his success throughout this season, dropping 27 in an away game at Woburn High School in January, also grabbing as many as 8 boards in an early season win, and dishing as many as 7 assists in another contest soon after. It will be interesting to see how his skillset translates to the D3 level.

Northfield Mt. Hermon School/Middlesex Magic 6’6” wing Evan Mirazimi recently made his college decision, committing to Carnegie-Mellon University. Mirazimi has been on our radar for some time now, as he transferred to NMH from The Governor’s Academy. Ranked on NERR’s New England Class of 2024, Mirazimi is a do-it-all type of player who makes winning plays. He is a proven hard-worker, and he shows it through his ability to get tough rebounds and guard the paint on defense. The high-percentage shooter and dominant slasher also shows a soft touch around the basket. He has had a great season with NMH this year, as they finished the regular season at 4th in the elite NEPSAC Class-AA. It will be fun to follow his career at Carnegie Mellon.

Maine-native guard Zach McLaughlin of Hampden Academy recently announced his college commitment, sharing that he would be staying in his home state to join UMaine-Farmington for the 2024-25 season. A top-10 prospect out of the state of Maine, McLaughlin has been on our radar for some time now. He stood out at the Elite 75 College Showcase this past summer, showing his shooting, slashing, and finishing abilities. He has led Hampden to success this year, finishing the regular season 19-2. It will be exciting to see how his career progresses at UMaine-Farmington.

Cushing Academy/Wisconsin Playground UAA 6’7” wing Nate Kwiecinski recently announced his commitment to Colby College to continue his basketball career in the NESCAC. Kwiecinski first jumped onto our radar when he transferred to Cushing last year, immediately demonstrating his shooting abilities, as well as a high basketball IQ overall. Our scouts noted his standout performances at the NEPSAC Showcase at Babson the following summer, as well as at the Slite 75 College Showcase this past summer, impacting the game with his inside skills on both ends of the floor, also using his general athleticism to his advantage at his size. It will be fun to track his career at Colby.
