Cooper ready for final year at Northampton.
Ellis Cooper is coming off a very successful run through the summer and fall circuits. His game has reached another level and college coaches have taken notice. The 6’3 forward from Northampton High School will acknowledge he has improved, but doesn’t want any credit until his senior year goes as planned.
Much like his on court demeanor, Cooper is all business, “We’ve(Northampton) had a pretty good summer, but the season is what really matters.”
He is well aware this is his last chance at a Western Massachusetts Division I Championship. Northampton and coach Rey Harp have put together a great run, seeded #2 in the tournament the last two seasons, but were beat in the quarterfinals in 2008 and the semifinals in 2009.
If Cooper continues to play like he has this fall, Northampton may just finish things off this year. Ellis has displayed great versatility and is capable of playing multiple positions on the court. He has the athletic ability to defend guards on the perimeter, and the body to bang with bigs in the post. He has also worked to expand his offensive game. Always a threat to attack the rim because he finishes so well in traffic, he has also improved his jump shot and looks comfortable stepping out.
Cooper’s recruitment is wide open. He has heard from several division 3 schools, a few division 2‘s(no offers yet), and prep school is also an option. Ellis is excited that his handwork has paid off but he is focused on one thing, “Right now I’m just thinking of the season with my team”.
After averaging an impressive 16 points and 10 rebounds as a junior, we’re sure the last thing opposing coaches want to hear is that Ellis Cooper is both improved and focused coming into his senior season.
