Comings and Goings

Rene Castro made a big announcement yesterday when he confirmed what had been rumored for weeks, that he would in fact be leaving Beaver Country Day and transferring to Worcester Academy.

It’s a big addition for Worcester to be sure as they continue to build a base of young local talent to compete in class AA.  For Beaver Country Day, the loss of Castro will be cushioned by the return of Jeff Spellman along with the arrival of Maurice and Jacquil Taylor, who will be transferring from Cambridge Rindge & Latin and reclassifying to the classes of 2013 and 2014 respectively.

Castro isn’t the only point guard on the move as New England will be losing two of our top prospects at that position.

Kareem Canty spent last season at Bridgton Academy and was reportedly debating between other local NEPSAC schools but has since decided on a move out west as he will suit up for Westwind Prep in Arizona.

Kevin Zabo, the rising sophomore who distinguished himself as a Terrific 25 prospect in the national class of 2014 last year, is reportedly on the move to Montrose Christian according to reports from multiple media outlets last week.

Leaving before he even arrived is Jaylen Bond, the former Pittsburgh commit who had planned to do a post-graduate year at St. Thomas More but now will head to the University of Texas as the final piece of their 2011 class.

Brewster Academy and South Kent will both be welcoming high profile talent into the region.  Brewster, who already returns a dynamic duo in Mitch McGary and Deonte Burton, adds a pair of teammates bound for Xavier in 2012.  Point guard Semaj Christian committed to the Musketeers late last month and announced he would head to Brewster shortly afterwards.  He’ll join Jalen Reynolds, who originally signed with Xavier in 2011, but now plans to do a post-graduate season before joining the Atlantic 10 powerhouse in September of 2012.

As for South Kent, they will be adding one of the top national prospects in the class of 2013 in Chris Thomas.  The six-foot-five two-guard is a native of Denver, Colorado who most recently attended Westwind Prep.  Thomas already lists Kentucky, Kansas, Arizona, and Louisville among his scholarship offers and is ranked a top five talent in the national class of 2013.

Also on the move are local 2011 prospects who have finalized plans for post-graduate years in order to join the class of 2012.  Tevin Falzon will head to Winchendon, Zach Askew to Cheshire Academy, Sam Willson to Deerfield, Joe Bramanti to Brewster, and Jamill Powell to Christ Christian Academy in North Carolina.

Tom Bajda will also be transferring to Winchendon and repeating his junior year to join the class of 2013.
