Chukwu Picks Providence
Less than 24 hours after it was reported that he would be choosing between Providence and St. Joseph’s, Paschal Chukwu made his choice and picked Ed Cooley’s Friars.
His commitment is the culmination of an incredibly long recruitment, at least as far as Providence is concerned.
Cooley and his staff actually began recruiting Chukwu while they were still at the University of Fairfield and made him a top priority in each of the last two summers. Even in the summer of 2012, when Chukwu was barely on the high-major radar, the Providence head coach was already tailing him firsthand.
Now, the Friars hard work has paid off as Chukwu became the second ESPN 100 prospect to commit so far in the class of 2014.
The commitment is a pivotal one for the Friars for a number of reasons, as detailed by ESPN.com, not just because Chukwu is ranked as a top five center in the country, but because he is still just scratching the surface of his potential.
The Fairfield Prep and Connecticut Basketball Club big man has made huge strides within his game in the last six months alone and is now blocking shots with even more consistency than ever before, becoming more of an offensive force, and gradually strengthening his body.
He’ll need to continue getting stronger and expanding his offensive game before arriving on the college level, but there’s little denying that he’ll be able to make an immediate contribution in the Big East.
