Cheshire’s Peterson to Montreal’s McGill

Cheshire Academy post-graduate Drew Peterson has committed to McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

A six-foot point guard, Peterson was a key contributor in Cheshire’s first-ever run to NEPSAC’s AA playoffs.  (Cheshire moved up to AA after winning the Class B crown in ’13-’14).  He shot nearly 40% from three, was a heady floor general and a hard-nosed defender for Cheshire’s Coach Kevin Kehoe, who said that “Drew has all the skill, intelligence and toughness needed to succeed at the next level.  He does what it takes to win.  And his best basketball is still ahead of him.  McGill is getting a real find in Drew.”

Among the world’s top academic institutions, McGill also has a storied basketball tradition (Basketball’s inventor, James Naismith, was a McGill graduate).  McGill’s pre-season schedule features strong D-1 competition, including, this past year, Indiana, Memphis, Fordham and Loyola-Maryland.  McGill Coach David DeAveiro, who coaches Canada’s 17U National Team and is back-to-back Coach of the Year in Canada’s RSEQ Conference, said “We are thrilled that Drew and his family are joining our McGill family. His high basketball IQ, leadership and point guard skills are a perfect fit for our style of play.”

Peterson will be joining a McGill team that includes former New England products in Noah Daoust, Tom Lacy and Christian McCue.

Before Cheshire, Peterson ran the point for the New Rochelle (NY) High School team that became world-famous for the “The Shot," the ESPY Award-finalist buzzer-beater.  He went to Cheshire following a strong AAU season this past Spring with the Academic Basketball Club.
