Cheshire Big Man Makes Choice

When you are a physically gifted six-foot-ten big man who happens to be left-handed, it’s a pretty good bet that you’re going to be a solid basketball prospect.

And that proved to be exactly the case for Cheshire High School’s Nate Howard

Howard, who ran with East Coast Elite on last spring’s AAU circuit, was hard to find during the summer’s live period, but that didn’t stop college coaches from making the trip to Cheshire this fall and winter to check in on the under the radar big man.

A multiple sport star who led Cheshire to a state championship in volleyball this fall, it was only earlier this year that the big man finally decided he wanted to pursue the hardwood at the next level.

Ultimately, he picked up interest from places like Hartford, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart, New Hampshire, Fordham, Towson, Hofstra, and even Maryland this year, which is why many were especially surprised to hear that he had committed to division III Keene State last week.

“The coaching staff and players are all great people, and the campus is very nice,” Howard told the New England Recruiting Report.  “I am excited to be an Owl and play at Keene State next year.”

You can bet Keene State is excited to have Howard as an Owl as his recent recruiting interest is tangible proof of his ability to play the game at a higher level.

Howard is averaging 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks per game this year for Cheshire, and is only really beginning to scratch the surface of his potential.  With him now focused on basketball for the foreseeable future, it certainly looks like Keene State just landed a steal.
