Catholic Memorial Guard Heading Ivy
Dartmouth scored a verbal commitment from one of the best kept secrets in New England on Tuesday afternoon as Catholic Memorial guard Guilien Smith pledged to the Big Green following a visit to campus.
While Smith is anything but a secret in the MIAA, he was flying below the radar during the recent AAU season while playing with “Basketball 2 the Limit.” The six-foot-one scoring guard had invitations to play for more high profile local clubs, but opted to remain with the same team he came up the ranks with and was pursued by several local college programs throughout the spring and the summer.
Smith had a huge junior season at Catholic Memorial, averaging 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists last year to help the squad to a 23-2 record and the Division I South championship. He was the only underclassmen to be named to the Boston Herald’s All-Scholastic Dream Team following the season while also being named MVP of the Catholic Conference.
Smith provides Dartmouth with a scoring guard who not only makes shots at a high rate from behind the three-point line but also has the quickness and creativity to consistently create his own offense. Combine that with the element of toughness he brings to the floor with him and he is expected to make an immediate contribution in the Ivy League.
Before that though, he’ll return to Catholic Memorial for his senior season, rejoin Aamahne Santos and Kellan Grady to form the best backcourt trio in the MIAA, and make their latest run at a state title after falling by just a single point in last year’s semifinals.
Smith becomes the first prospect to commit to Dartmouth head coach Paul Cormier in the 2015 class.
