Castro Calls it for Butler
Worcester Academy senior guard Rene Castro took to his twitter account early Saturday night to announce his commitment to Butler.
“Thanks for all of my family and friends who support me i have decided to commit to butler university to play basketball,” he tweeted at 6:52p.m.
His commitment comes nearly ten days after trimming his list down to four schools – Butler, Duquesne, George Washington, and Boston University.
“Butler had the right match for Rene with great academics and basketball,” Worcester Academy head coach Jamie Sullivan said. “Rene felt Butler would afford him the best opportunity to fulfill his dreams on and off the court.”
Butler is entering their first season in the Atlantic 10 and their recruiting efforts have expanded accordingly as they’ve gone to great lengths to make an impact in the northeast after having traditionally not recruited the region.
Castro becomes the second New England product to commit to head coach Brad Stevens so far this year, joining his BABC teammate Andrew Chrabascz who made his commitment following the July evaluation period.
Castro has had a decorated high school career at all three of his stops: taking an MIAA state championship for Milton as a freshman; scoring over 1000 points during his two seasons at Beaver Country Day; and earning Gatorade Player of the Year honors in Massachusetts last year after rattling off a string of 30 point games that extended throughout the majority of the month of February.
His AAU career with the BABC has been equally successful. He was a key contributor to a BABC team that won back-to-back sixteen-and-under AAU national championships in 2010 and 2011 and was equally critical to the team’s EYBL championship in July of 2011. This past season, Castro emerged as the team’s leading scorer as they qualified for a return to the Nike Peach Jam.
