Carl Pierre Commits to UMass
Carl Pierre won't be needing that post-graduate year after all.
The Boston College High School star was prepared to spend an extra year in the prep ranks but it turns out all he needed was two extra weekends with his Metro Boston team.
Pierre committed to new UMass head coach Matt McCall on Monday night, accepeting a full athletic scholarship offer from the local Atlantic 10 school.
"Over the past year I've been working extremely hard," Pierre said, "waking up early, lifting and getting shots up every day before school. That carried over into my season at B.C. High and then into the live period. I came into April as hungry as ever and all the work I had put in showed."
After finishing his high school career without a division I offer to his name, Pierre's game went to totally unprecedented this April while starring with Metro Boston. McCall was just one of the division I coaches who extended an offer, and after a recent visit, Pierre decided to accept.
"First of all it is a great school academically," Pierre said. "The Atlantic 10 is a great league and I have an opportunity to play right away so I just thought it was an opportuity I shouldn't pass up."
Pierre is the fourth local product to UMass since McCall's arrival as he joins Jaylen Brantley and Curtis Cobb, who are transferring in from Maryland and Fairfield respectively, as well as New Hampton big man Khalea Turner-Morris.
