BU Lands STM Big Man

Boston University head coach Joe Jones landed his second commitment in the class of 2013 on Monday, this one from St. Thomas More post-graduate Dylan Haines.

Haines is a six-foot-eleven big man who came to STM from Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, incredibly, without any division I offers.

That quickly changed after arriving in the prep school ranks as he was one of the primary attractions of STM open gyms this fall.

While he still needs to get stronger and more assertive playing against contact, Haines’ upside is absolutely through the roof.  He’s tremendously skilled for a player his size – able to score with great touch around the rim or stretch opposing defenses all the way out to the three-point line.  He also has very soft hands and is an excellent passer.

Unlike most skilled big men, Haines has plenty of physical tools as well.  He runs the floor well and has no problems with his lateral movements.

Put all the pieces together and Haines continues to live up to the lofty expectations which Jones has set on the recruiting front since arriving at BU.

Last year it was ESPN 100 point guard Mo Watson and local product John Papale who both turned down multiple offers from higher levels.  This season, Haines joins Cedric Hankerson, a six-foot-three swingman from Coral Reef High School in Florida, who spurned high-major suitors including Minnesota to sign with the Terriers.

Haines becomes the third St. Thomas More product to commit to a division I school so far this year joining Denzel Gregg (Fordham) and Amadi Udenyi (Hofstra).
