Beaver Country Day Lands New Coach & Freshman Star

Juan Figueroa, who has been the head boys’ basketball coach at O’Bryant School of Math & Sciences for the last ten years, has accepted the head coaching position at Beaver Country Day School.

Figueroa will be leaving behind quite a legacy at O’Bryant, having led his team to the Boston City South championship in 7 of the last 8 years, going undefeated in league play in 4 of those seasons, and reaching the division II south sectional finals on three separate occasions.

“This job is very appealing to me because of what if offers,” Figueroa told the Boston Herald’s Danny Venture.  “I feel like the athletic programs at Beaver are on the rise and I’d like to be a part of it.”

Figueroa won’t be the only new addition to the BCD program next year as Rene Castro will be transferring from Milton High School and repeating his freshman year.

Castro wasn’t even on the varsity roster to begin his freshman season at Milton, but was called up for the last 6 games of the regular season, and ended up making a huge name for himself during the team’s run to the MIAA Division II Championship.

Castro averaged almost 14 points per game in the state tournament and dropped 23 on Woburn in the state semi-finals at the TD Banknorth Garden.

The young guard has continued to play to rave reviews this spring having led his All for One AAU team to the finals of the Massachusetts 15 and under state tournament and also being named to the all-tournament team at the Gym Rat Challenge.

Castro is a scoring guard who should be able to put big numbers on the board right away next season and is also capable of playing either backcourt position.  He’s very effective going to the rim but is also a bit of a throw back with a patented mid-range game.
