Baron Coming Home

Billy Baron announced on Thursday that he will leave the University of Virginia and transfer to the University of Rhode Island, to play for his father and URI head coach Jim Baron.

"I love my teammates and my coaches at Virginia," Baron said in a release.  "Virginia is a great place but I want to go home, be with my family and play for my dad."

"I knew when Billy decided to come to Virginia he had a very hard decision and labored over it," said Virginia head coach Tony Bennett. "Obviously we're sad to see him go and appreciate his contributions to our program, but the desire to play for your father is very strong, as I can personally attest. We'll miss him and wish him well."

Baron was one of the top guards in New England last year as a post-graduate at Worcester Academy.  Prior to that he starred at Bishop Hendricken High School in Rhode Island.

The URI head coach's youngest son, Baron was initially committed to URI last year before opting to head to Virginia.  Now he returns and will have to sit a year per NCAA transfer rules but is expected to be eligible after the first semester of next season at which time he should have three and a half years of eligibility.
