BABC Holiday Classic – Event Recap

Day two of the BABC Holiday Classic was cut short on Saturday with the final three days of the afternoon being rescheduled due to the winter storm.  

Nevertheless, the 17th annual event still hosted four competitive games over the course of two days before inclement weather brought Saturday’s action to an early end.  

Things got underway on Friday at the Kroc Center when Brighton scored a hard fought 61-58 win over Cambridge.  Malik James and Daivon Edwards would pace the victors on the offensive end.  Edwards scored a game high 22 points by going five of eight from behind the three-point line, but James was the team’s primary facilitator with 21 points and 9 assists.  Nick Simpson, who had a big performance a day earlier at the Shooting Touch Holiday Tournament, suffered a hand injury that took him out of the game late in the third quarter, but managed to play through the pain in order to make a pair of big defensive plays to clinch the game down the stretch.  

The second game featured Capital Prep against East Boston in what was the first of a number of match-ups scheduled between the greater Hartford region and the greater Boston region.  Round one would go to Hartford as Capital Prep delivered a 77-62 win behind the backcourt combination of Levy Gillespie Jr. and Kahlil Dukes.  Gillespie led the way with 25 points while Dukes was content to play the role of distributor while contributing 18 of his own.  

The final game of the day on Friday saw another Hartford vs. Boston match-up with Windsor going up against Everett. Jared Wilson-Frame led the way for Windsor with 22 points and 9 rebounds while Chaunce Dunbar chipped in with 11 and Tyler Rowe added 6 points while handing out 7 assists from the point.  Timmance McKinney would lead Everett with 20 points of his own while Tyree Gregory slashed his way to 16 points of his own.  

The lone game of the day on Saturday saw Windsor and New Mission both return to the court after coming off hard fought wins the night before (New Mission beat Mansfield at the Shooting Touch Holiday Classic).  Wilson-Frame would come up with another big game for the Warriors, dropping a game high 28 points, while Juwan Gooding would add 18 points and 6 assists for his second consecutive impressive performance in as many days.  

Subsequently scheduled match-ups between Brighton and University (CT), Capital Prep and Cambridge Rindge & Latin, and Everett and East Boston were all postponed until MLK weekend.
