Albrecht to Michigan

Northfield Mount Hermon School’s post-graduate point guard Spike Albrecht made a verbal commitment to the University of Michigan on Friday night while on the Ann Arbor campus for his official visit.

Albrecht, who had primarily low-major interest throughout most of the season, saw his stock jump in recent weeks after leading Northfield Mount Hermon to the NEPSAC class AAA championship.

Albrecht took home tournament MVP honors while playing all 40 minutes in each of NMH’s four post-season games.

“He just became an unflappable player where time, situation, score, and opponent just didn’t make an impact on him,” NMH head coach John Carroll said.  “He was prepared for every minute he played and for the last ten games of the season he played every minute of every game.”

Ultimately, the Indiana native trimmed his list to just Michigan and Appalachian State but couldn’t turn down the opportunity to return to the Midwest to play in the Big Ten.

“He’s as excited as you would imagine,” Spike’s father, Chuck Albrecht told the Post-Tribune.  “It was really a ‘Good Friday’, really a ‘Good Friday.’

“For it to be the University of Michigan, it’s more than we ever could have dreamt of.  It’s an incredible opportunity.  Things couldn’t have fallen into place any better.”

Albrecht becomes the fourth player to commit to Michigan in the class of 2012 joining two of his AAU teammates with the SYF Players in Glenn Robinson III and Brewster Academy big man Mitch McGary.  St. Mark’s swingman Nikolas Stauskas in the fourth member of the recruiting class.

Albrecht is expected to sign his National Letter of Intent when the late signing period begins on Wednesday.
