Abu, Chukwu at NBA Camp
The NBA Players’ Association Top 100 Camp, or “NBA Camp” as it is often known, got underway on Thursday at the University of Virginia.
The field, which included 100 of top players in the country, included Kimball Union Academy forward Abdul-Malik Abu and Fairfield Prep center Paschal Chukwu.
Wilbraham and Monson big man Goodluck Okonoboh was also invited but unable to participate.
Abu earned praise Friday morning from Scout.com’s Evan Daniels who wrote, “Piggybacking off his strong spring, Malik-Abu started off camp with a quality outing. The hard playing 6-foot-7 power forward was active in the paint, battled with the opposition for rebounds and found ways to score. He’s confident and effective shooting mid-range jump shots, but he also has a right jump hook. Malik-Abu was strong in the paint and was able to secure put back opportunities as well.”
The NBA Camp is regarded as one of the premier basketball events available to high school athletes, primarily because it doesn’t have any exclusive affiliations with any particular sneaker brand, and has produced over 130 future NBA players in its 19 year history.
There are also over 30 current and former NBA players on staff this week, instructing campers during practices, games, and skill development stations.
The camp also includes a mentoring component where the current NBA players meet with campers for small group discussions on managing off-the-court challenges, maximizing educational oppoertunities, and preparing for life after basketball.
