Abreu Stays Home
Just the other day, it was announced that Phillips Andover & Mass Rivals guard Xavier Abreu would be taking his talents to the CAA, joining the Northeastern Huskies following the upcoming season.
Abreu has been making a lot of noise of late, as he was the x-factor for Phillips Andover this year contributing multiple high scoring games in their run to the NEPSAC Class A title game.
Entering the playoffs as the eighth seed, Andover began their run with a huge upset win over top seeded Loomis-Chafee 66-56.
The semifinal against Taft was a dog fight, but Abreu stepped up big time. He finished with 24 of Andover’s 52 points, including the two game-winning free throws just as time was about to expire.
Although they would ultimately come up short in the final game, Abreu again was a bright spot. After the game, he picked up his first D1 offer from Albany.
For the season, Abreu posted impressive averages: 20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, shooting 39.7% from 3PT range and 80% from the free-throw line.
With Northeastern, it is easy to see the Lynn native’s shot creation and shot making prowess translate to the next level. He has a very fluid release on the ball, with range that extends well beyond the three-point line.
In discussing his decision Abreu stated, “The combination of great academics and basketball were big parts of my decision to commit to Northeastern.”
“I was confident that Northeastern would provide a great foundation for my future, as well as for me to grow as a player and person,” he continued, speaking to how the university will help him reach his future goals on and off the court.
He added, “Another thing I really liked is the city vibe that the campus offers. Being close to home is also a plus since it allows my family and friends to visit and watch my games.”
The decision to choose Northeastern sounds like a perfect match according to Abreu, and looks to be so as just one day after his announcement of receiving an offer from the Huskies, he would announce his commitment to them.
The fit with Coach Coen is seamless according to Abreu: “Coach Coen played a major part in my decision; he has a great reputation in the basketball world and all of our conversations have been so positive and encouraging.”
He capped things off with, “I truly believe Northeastern is the best place for me to continue my basketball and academic careers and I’m excited to start my journey.”
The Lynn native is another great example of how hard work both in the gym and in the books can lead to great future opportunities.
For Xavier, it’s a chance to get a free education at a prestigious university, while playing Division One basketball, and being close to his family.
It sounds like an excellent opportunity, and we wish him the best!
