2025 Fall WNY #E75 Recap: The Backcourt Pt. I

The guard play we saw this past weekend at Roberts Wesleyan was noteworthy. Many prospects from the Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse areas came out and put themselves on our radar. A strong group from top to bottom, there are guards in today's recap who will likely be playing at all levels of the NCAA.

Check it out.

Constantine Johnson, Penfield: A guard we came away very impressed with this past June, Johnson was arguably the best player in the gym on Sunday. The Penfield senior brings great backcourt size to complement his body control, finishing, and knock-down shooting skills. Expect Johnson to really take off as he gets ready for a massive winter season. Scholarship schools should be all over him.

Amir Moye, Health Sciences Charter: Moye entered the showcase with a massive reputation in Buffalo, and showed just why in his outing. The point guard is a threat to score in a variety of ways, most notably as a downhill threat. He can beat defenders off the dribble with his bag of moves, has a smooth euro step, and he’s wicked quick. He’s heard from multiple Division One schools.

Alexander Trombley, Liverpool: Trombley put his skill set on display for our staff in June and once again proved why he’s a college player this past weekend. The 6’2” guard plays with quickness and can change the game with his playmaking vision to spray passes on the move. His shotmaking is notable, as he gets downhill, but also converts pull-ups at a good clip.

Jahzar Greene, Bishop Timon: Greene was a recipient of two Division II offers on the spot at two of our June events, and is a top guard in Central New York this winter. His skilled game allows him to take over as a scorer in the lane with sneaky athleticism and great touch. Defensively, his ball pressure is game-changing, and coming around as a more consistent shooter would be a big jump for him.

Brayden Stedman, Churchville-Chili: One of the Rochester area’s best guards in the junior class once again showed why. A classic example of a coach's son, Stedman has a great feel for the game, making strong reads to get his own buckets or dish it out. He attacks the basket linearly and is a consistent shooter who creates with efficient use of his dribble.

Russell Ellis, Greece Athena: Ellis has some nice strides since our last viewing of his game in September of 2024, and will be a junior to watch this winter. The point guard utilizes his quickness well to change pace and keep defenders guessing. He limits mistakes with his heads-up guard play and packs a very creative handle in his bag.

Jason Small, Churchville-Chili: Small will be another strong senior guard this year at Churchville-Chili HS. His anticipation as a ball mover caught our eye, as well as his ability to score it at multiple levels.

Christian Gill, Canisius: Gill has made some noise out in the Buffalo area and looks to have a big junior season. Gill had one of the strongest outings on the day, showing off his upside as a college guard. He’s tough, sees the floor very well, plays with a running motor, and scores it through contact. His ability to thread passes through tight windows is very impressive.

Roman Maldonado, West Irondequoit: Maldonado has continued to elevate his game as time passes and looks to put together a strong junior season. He does a great job of leading the charge as a point guard, directing traffic to make strong reads to get others looks, and gets his own well on drives.

Deyor Smith, Nottingham: Playing up as a sophomore amongst upperclassmen, it was easy to see why Smith was a varsity starter as a freshman. The Nottingham point guard makes efficient use of his handle to get to his spots, and does a great job of facilitating the offense.

Demarcus Samuels, Mother Teresa (Canada): The Canadian native came down to put himself on the radar of college coaches in the US and played well. He brings great rebounding to the backcourt, gets inside, and can finish through contests from the defense.

Tacari McCray, Olmsted: McCray looks to cap off his stellar high school career this winter with a strong season. He does a great job of scoring the ball at multiple levels, brings quickness to the lead guard spot and plays very disruptive defense. Local schools looking for a guard in 2026 should definitely look his way.

RJ Johnson, Victor: Johnson played well in his Elite 75 debut, showing off his guard skills throughout. His quickness off the dribble allows him to get inside and finish, while he can make smart plays off two in the lane as well.

JJ Mastin, Victor: Mastin looks to be another focal guard along with RJ Johnson for Victor this season. His slick handle on the ball and skilled bag when on the move caught our eye in his game sets.

Jonah Bialek, Fillmore: Another coach's son, Bialek brings great anticipation and the ability to read the floor to the court. He makes strong passing reads, knocks down jumpers consistently and scores it inside. The Fillmore junior put together a strong season last year and plans to keep that momentum building.

Marcello Moorehand, Proctor: The Utica-based guard will look to finish his high school career off in style this winter. His ability to stop and play off two is notable, while he can finish with good control and make plays for others.
