2025-26 NEPSAC AA Postseason Nears
The high school basketball season is nearing its end quickly, and before we know it, the grassroots season will be fully in motion.
While most of the state association playoffs are up and running, the NEPSAC season still has about a week to go. To begin breaking down how the season went, we’re going to take a look at the AA level.
The Top Five
Cushing has been the favorite to win AA since the summer really, and they have played up to that expectation so far. The Penguins sit at 23-5 on the season with two more games to go. They’ve taken down some of the nation’s best with wins against Blair, IMG, and Putnam Science, and have proven they can play with anybody.
Ryan Moesch leads the charge as one of the most dynamic guards around, with Theo Edema anchoring the paint, and a strong supporting cast that includes Anthony Vick, Brady O’Connell, Jack Hynes, Nate Blenman, and more. With size, experience, and plenty of different ways to score the ball, Cushing looks to make their first NEPSAC AA Championship appearance since 2023.
Two Games remaining: Worcester (2/25), Tilton (2/28)
St. George’s has been strong from the start with a 22-3 record thus far, putting themselves in the conversation at the top of AA. Marist-commit Dywane Chess captains the team with his blend of physicality and shot creation. Around Chess, the Dragons have depth with shooting from Casey Bazzano, strong guard play from Adriel Cantave and Ethan Njenga, with Kenny Benedict, Jelani Middleton, Otis Crosby, and Chance Finlayson making strong contributions.
The Dragons have no shortage in talent and look to be up to the task as the postseason nears.
Four Games remaining: Tabor (2/24), Belmont Hill (2/25), Macduffie (2/27), Middlesex (2/28)
Winchendon is 20-6 on the year, positioning themselves in the upper tier of AA this season. The Wapiti have big seniors Quinn Gibson (Cornell) and Brady Sehlhorst (Elon) to lean on as experienced postgraduate players. Upstate New York is a common theme with Winchendon, as Syracuse native Tavin Penix makes a strong impact with his shotmaking. Treddy Faison runs the show at point guard, and Cam Blankenberg contributes at the forward position.
With some big wins on their resume, Winchendon looks to put a stamp on their resurgent season in the AA Tournament.
Three Games remaining: St. Andrew’s (2/25), Brimmer & May (2/27), Kimball Union (2/28)
Lawrence sits at 19-7 on the season with their homegrown star Alex Egbuonu (Marquette) leading the way. Egbuonu is one of the top players nationally with force and finesse to get to the basket combined with shotmaking and length. Evan Mitchner Jr brings quickness, scoring and passing as the squad’s other senior, and guys like Paxton Ivy, AJ Reinertson, and Caleb Baker play their roles well as secondary scorers. Ivy, a native of Texas, is a dynamic shooter who can let it fly on the move and hit at a good clip.
While they currently have a 0-3 record against the three teams mentioned earlier, Lawrence has the talent to make a run.
Three Games remaining: Wilbraham & Monsoon (2/24), Roxbury Latin (2/25), BB&N (2/28)
Cheshire is another team making noise in AA competition this season with a 19-4 record to back it up. The Cats have strong a senior/postgraduate duo leading the charge in James Caldarella (Air Force) and John Spinoso (Trinity). Caldarella brings multilevel scoring and playmaking, while Spinoso rebounds and gets to the basket.
Juniors from Upstate New York, Christian Zarzycki and Chase Leonardo are knockdown shooters while NYC native Aidan Maguire has shined as a passer, while adding another layer to their shooting depth. The Cats have dropped just four of their fifteen AA games this season, and can be a threat to make a run.
Two Games remaining: Pomfret (2/25), St. Andrew’s (2/27)
Rounding Out AA
Albany has had some impressive wins to start their NEPSAC tenure, and can be a sneaky out as a lower seed. Yale commit Jack Louridas has really come into his own as a primary initiator, while junior Logan Rodriguez has flashed as a vertical athlete who can convert from outside as well. Daemen-commit Jamar Macon plays his role well at the five spot with Daniel Smalls, Elijah Taylor, Xavier Lopez and Cyrus Matia (Middlebury) running the backcourt. Albany is floating around .500 on the year with a few games to go.
Brimmer & May is likely on the outside looking in where things currently stand, as they boast a 5-7 record in AA, but they do have games left against Winchendon and Wilbraham & Monson. The Gators are battle-tested from their NEBL matchups, and a big win against the EPL’s Winston Salem Christian. Windston Legentus is a college-ready scoring guard with talented juniors Ladanion Payne & Tyson Robinson helping lead the way as well. Guys like John Fitzgibbon, BJ Dawan-Abdullah, Brady Palladino and Cam Thornton have stepped up in big moments as well, and the Gators look to finish out the AA 7-7.
Kimball Union has an 8-6 record in AA play on the season, and is a sneaky late seed if they are to make the playoffs. Three Division I commits lead the way in Hudson Scroggins (Valparaiso), Brandon Arnold (Marist), and Merrick Smith (American). Scroggins has some scoring versatility to get points inside and out, while Arnold leads into his strong two-way play, and Merrick Smith brings length and touch to the post. With an older supporting cast of Noah Limbago, Zach Romich, and Chris Lupone making plays as well, KUA has the potential to be a tough out.
Macduffie has had highs and lows throughout the season while fighting the injury bug, but nonetheless, still looks to be in contention for a lower seed in AA. UC Riverside commit Brayden Harris, Patrick Sagna, and Xavier McCall have all missed extended time this season, but guys like Elijah Avery-Turner, Keyshon Joyner, Daniel Wheeler, and Darien Rudder have been crucial throughout. The Mustangs have a few games left to make their final case in playoff seeding, as well as some time to recuperate for a potential run.
Saint Andrew’s is in contention for a playoff spot this season as they ride right around the .500 mark. The Saints have the size to match up with some of the top teams in AA in Harrison Aligbe, Lorcan Bailey Morrow, and George Zarnadze if they are to qualify for the playoffs. Juniors Elijah McNair and Talib Martin have been pivotal pieces to the puzzle with Ramere Brown, Uriah Williams and Malachi Odugbela adding more scoring in the backcourt. The Saints will play three teams projected to make the AA tournament to round out the season, a crucial test to wrap things up.
The NEPSAC Tournament bracket will be released in around a week from now, and there are still some games left that can make a big impact in the seeding. Stay tuned to see how things close out.
