Unsigned Series – Tom Hunt

The New England Recruiting Report’s “Unsigned Series” will profile some of the region’s top available prospects remaining in the class of 2014.

There isn’t a team in Class AA of the NEPSAC playing better basketball right now than St. Andrew’s.

The Saints opened the season by dropping 3 of their first 5 contests, but have since won 14 in a row and counting, including an 87-57 win over Cushing Academy in the rematch of last year’s New England final.

While Notre Dame bound forward Bonzie Colson is the obvious star of this year’s Saints’ team, one player who doesn’t get the credit he deserves for their success is senior guard Tom Hunt.

Hunt knocked down 65 three-pointers in the first 18 games of the season, connecting on 46% of his attempts, while averaging over 15 points per game.

“I had Joey Accaoui in 2007 and Michael Culpo in 2008 and both received many division I offers.  Culpo ended up going to LIU and Accaoui to Vermont, where they both had excellent careers and led their teams into the NCAA tournament,” St. Andrew’s head coach Michael Hart said.  “I think Hunt is as good or possibly better than those two and he has one division two offer.  It’s shocking.”

While Hunt is one of the best shooters in New England’s 2014 class, he’s far from one dimensional and a much better defender than often given credit for.

Hart points to the recent match-up with Cushing Academy and Hunt’s role in shutting down the Penguins’ loaded backcourt as proof of this under-rated part of his game.

The ability to be a high percentage three-point shooter and defend his position makes Hunt the type of prospect who has immediate value upon reaching the next level, especially given the limited number of prospects who can really shoot the ball at a high level.

Additionally, Hart says he’s just the type of team oriented guy who will end up making the most of his abilities, just as he’s done over the last two years.

“He has more than proved himself on the AAU circuit and with us.  He’s played in front of everyone and made shots,” Hart said.  “He has no baggage, comes from a great family, and his parents allow his coaches to actually coach their son.  He’s an easy qualifier who would help a division I program win games just like Accaoui and Culpo did.”

Here is a look at some of Hunt’s highlights from the most recent July evaluation period:
