UConn Takes Local Prep Product

Notre Dame big man Cleveland Melvin made a verbal commitment to the University of Connecticut on Wednesday morning, but will not sign until the late signing period.

"Obviously the biggest question most people are going to have is about the timing," said Notre Dame Prep head coach Ryan Hurd.  "Cleve had other visits scheduled and never intended on signing early, he just decided that UConn was the place where he really wanted to be."

Melvin selected the Huskies over DePaul, South Florida, Seton Hall, and TCU according to Hurd.

"Obviously growing up in East Baltimore the opportunity to play for Coach Calhoun was very appealing, with the success guys like Reggie Lewis and Rudy Gay have had," Hurd said.

At six-foot-eight Melvin is a fantastic athlete who excels in the open floor.

He played his AAU ball with the Cecil Kirk organization, the same club that Gay starred for coming out of high school.

Melvin and his Notre Dame Prep team will be in action tomorrow as they take on the top ranked team in the country, Hargrave Military Academy, at the National Prep Showcase.
