St. Johnsbury Forward Earns Scholarship

St. Johnsbury forward Vlad Cobzaru accepted an offer from Georgia Regents University earlier this week, becoming the first (and likely only) senior in the state of Vermont to earn a full athletic scholarship.

Georgia Regents is an NCAA division II school located in Augusta, Georgia and formerly known as Augusta State.  They have a storied basketball tradition under head coach Dip Metress, advancing to three consecutive Elite Eights from 2008 to 2010 and also returning to the NCAA tournament this season after coming out of the Peach Belt Conference.

“It is a great opportunity for Vlad to play at the scholarship level, at a high level division II program,” said St. Johnsbury head coach Tom O’Shea.

Cobzaru averaged 15 points and 8 rebounds per game this season for St. Johnsbury, his second in the United States since arriving from his home country of Romania.

He has also starred on Romania’s junior national teams in each of the last two summers during various European championships.

A six-foot-eight and two-hundred-and-thirty pound big man, Cobzaru had made consistent strides since arriving at St. Johnsbury, becoming both more consistent with his overall production while also becoming accustomed to physicality of the American game inside the paint.
