Springs Commits to UConn in ‘19
An already loaded UConn 2019 recruiting class picked up one more late addition on Tuesday when Richard Springs made a verbal commitment to join the Huskies in this fall's freshman class.
Springs graduated from the MacDuffie School in the spring and was set to do a post-graduate year at Brewster Academy, remaining in the same 2020 class he had been listed in since he arrived at MacDuffie in the fall of 2017, but ultimately decided to join Connecticut a year earlier than expected.
"I have thought long and hard about this decision. I was all set to do another year of high school at Brewster Academy," Springs said, "but after speaking with my family and weighing my options, the realtionship that I have developed with Coach Hurley and Coach Kimani [Young} and the opportunity to play at a storied program like UConn was too much to pass up. I am extremely excited to join the Husky family."
Springs is coming off a strong EYBL season with the PSA Cardinals and particularly impressive performace at the EYBL Finals at the Peach Jam in which he averaged 11 points and 13.4 rebounds per game for the PSA Cardinals.
He joins a UConn class that already includes his teammates James Bouknight along with two other ESPN 100 products in Akok Akok, who enrolled at mid-year, and Jalen Gaffney. Springs provides some much-needed interior depth and rebounding that should nicely compliment the floor-spacing and rim-protecting the Akok offers up front.
Together this group represents Hurley's first full recruiting class as the head coach at UConn and will serve as the foundation of the program moving forward.
