Rising Senior Spotlight - Matt Boen

With still a year of high school basketball in front of him, Mansfield junior Matt Boen has already collected more awards and championships than most of the state's most decorated seniors.

From a statistical perspective, versatile doesn't even begin to cover it as his perimeter rebounding and defensive instincts are perhaps even more rare than his very impressive scoring and playmaking numbers.

If you're interested in blood-lines, well he's got those too. His dad played two sports and is in the Stonehill Hall of Fame, where he remains the baseball coach. Both of his older brothers starred at Mansfield before him, one of whom just finished his own career at Stonehill, while his older sister was a cheerleader at Providence.

From a recruiting perspective, he's heard from various levels so far but was counting on the spring and summer recruiting periods as his chance to prove himself beyond the MIAA.

Personal Statement

I am a tough 6'2 left handed point guard who can affect a game in multiple different ways. My strongest asset is my ability to attack the basket, it doesn't matter what defense is in front of me, I can get to wherever I want on the floor and finish through contact above the rim. I am a very efficient shooter from outside. Over the past two years I've shot over 40% from the three point line. I'm a knockdown shooter and shoot at a high level while contested. I consider myself to be a great rebounder and shot blocker out of my position. Over the years I've instilled an intense "refuse to lose" personality, my goal is to guard the best player on the floor for 32 minutes. I have great court vision and awareness. This season I lead my team in every statistical category except scoring, while leading my team to the D1 Semi Finals at the TD Garden. I've spent a lot of time watching my brother play at a high level in the NE-10 for Stonehill. I had high hopes for this spring and summer to showcase my abilities and prove my worth. I am extremely confident I can play and have an affect on a team at the scholarship level.

Recommendations

"We've had some extremely talented players come out of the RAB program and Matty may end up being the most gifted of them all! He can do just about anything on a basketball court. It's difficult to pin point a specific part of Matty's game that makes him so appealing because he can take over at any time with his ability to shoot, attack, distribute, rebound, defend...He's a walking triple double. Matty is a GAMER who wants to play on the big stage & have the ball in his hands to lead a team. He might be the most underrated C/O 2021 player in all of New England. 100% scholarship level talent with room to grow."
- Brendan Carter, Director, Rise Above Basketball

"I have had the pleasure of coaching 3 Boen's and unfortunately Matty is the last one.  As the youngest of 2 other very successful athletes Matty has always had to be a super competitor just to stay on the court.  He has used that competitiveness to quickly become one of the top players in program history.  Matty has the unique ability to seem like he is every on the court.  Especially when you need him the most.  At the guard position this past season he had multiple games with 10+ rebounds in a game.  He had 3 games with 6 or more steals in a game.  In two different games he sealed victories by getting a rebound where he came from the other side of the court to get the ball and a steal in another game jumping a passing lane and ending the chance of the other team scoring a go ahead basket.  Matty has high basketball IQ.  I think Matty will be a huge asset to any college program."

Scouting Report

"First and foremost, he's a playmaker on both ends of the floor. He is super crafty with his dribble, as well as in the lane. Just being a lefty gives plenty of defenders problems but he also has great chance of pace, use of a variety of atypical angles, and a confidence and flair about him. Defensively, his steal numbers are off the charts, which speaks to both his quick reactions but also his overall IQ for the game. The way he rebounds the ball from the perimeter is really unique and, finally, he can shoot it too - not just spotting up but even making threes off the dribble or on the move."
