Prep Profile - Marianapolis Prep
Few NEPSAC programs have demonstrated the same level of consistency over the years as Marianapolis Prep and coming into the 2012-2013 season, head coach Andrew Vitale is once again set on leading the Golden Knights to a successful season.
This year’s roster will draw their strength from the interior, where the versatile trio of Greg Senat, Bobby Ahearn, and Eric Long not only provides a group of frontcourt players with complimenting styles but also three players who are all coming off successful summers, and consequently playing with a lot of confidence heading into the upcoming season.
Senat, who we profiled last week on NERR, is almost a totally different player than the one who left Marianapolis last spring. He’s shed 20 pounds from his frame and become more assertive on both ends of the floor.
On the recruiting front Senat now claims offers from Fairfield, Drexel, St. Peter’s, Hartford, Sacred Heart, New Hampshire, Holy Cross, Elon, Radford, Colgate, American, and Lehigh.
Bobby Ahearn also had a productive summer, beginning with a strong showing at Hoop Mountain’s Super Week II and culminating with reported scholarship offers from Holy Cross and Stonehill.
Like Senat, Ahearn appears to have himself in good shape coming into the season and with his perimeter game a now consistent part of his offensive arsenal, he’ll also provide the team with the versatility to slide over to the small forward spot, allowing the team to play three big men at one time.
The new addition to the frontline will be Cheshire Academy transfer Eric Long, a six-foot-six forward who also earned his first division I scholarship offer this summer while running with the New York city based Team Scan.
The team’s backcourt will largely depend on two incoming post-graduates in DeSean Miller and Mike Mallory.
Miller is a point guard from Utah who arrives poised to run the show for Marianapolis, while Mallory is a scoring guard from Holy Cross High School in Connecticut who is still recovering from off-season knee surgery but expected to be ready for the beginning of practice in November.
While the backcourt may not have the same star power that the frontcourt possesses, they do have plenty of depth. Post-graduate Steve Edmonds and repeat junior Travis Descoteaux are two skilled guards ready to contribute with their fundamentally sound games and ability to stroke threes.
The rotation figures to be completed by Alexander Dubovitskiy and Eric DAguanno, both of whom will also contributed with their long distance shooting range.
With Mallory, Edmonds, Descoteaux, Dubovitskiy, and D’Aguanno all being dangerous three-point shooters, and Miller projecting as the guy to run the show, Marianapolis’ blueprint for success appears to be a good one as the floor will be spaced and the lane open, allowing their interior trio to do their best work.
