One on One with Nate Lubick

Less then two short weeks ago St. Mark’s hosted over 50 college coaches, including numerous head coaches at the high major level, for their only open gym workout of the pre-season.  Today Nate Lubick reflects upon that day and also sheds some light on his own recruitment.

NERR – Were you nervous going into that workout, knowing that it would be your only chance this fall to play in front of college coaches?

Nate Lubick – I wasn’t too nervous.  We had been doing that all summer…playing in front of college coaches.

NERR – In retrospect, how did you feel you played that day?

Nate Lubick – I thought I played alright.  I could have done a couple of things better, but overall I thought I played pretty well.

NERR – Going into that day who did you have scholarship offers from?

Nate Lubick – Virgina, URI, and UMass

NERR – And who have you picked up offers from since then?

Nate Lubick – Louisville, Georgetown, Marquette, UConn, Georgia Tech, Providence, and Michigan

NERR – Wow, all of those schools have offered in the last two weeks?

Nate Lubick – Actually most of them offered that day

NERR – Do you have any leaders yet in the process?

Nate Lubick – No, not really…not yet.

NERR – How about a timetable, with so many kids committing early these days are you thinking about doing something like that?

Nate Lubick – No…I’m not saying I’m going to wait until the last second.  I’ll probably make a list next fall.  But then I definitely want to take my time and learn as much as I can about each school.

NERR – So what will you be looking for in a school?

Nate Lubick – The most important thing will be the academics.  I want to go to a good school, which most of those are.  Having a good basketball history is important to me, plus going somewhere that fits my style of play.  And obviously my relationship with the coaching staff will be important too.

NERR – It is hard not to notice that a lot of the schools recruiting you are also recruiting Erik [Murphy].  Have you guys talked about playing together at the next level?

Nate Lubick – We’ve gotten that question a lot lately.  We joke around about it a lot, but we haven’t talked seriously about it.  That’s something that we’ll probably talk about in the future though.

NERR – With three seasons still remaining in your high school career, clearly you are going to continue to improve your all around game quite a bit.  But is there any one particular area where you are anxious to prove your worth to college coaches?

Nate Lubick – I obviously have a lot of things I have to work on, but I want to continue to prove to coaches that I can defend perimeter players at the higher levels.

NERR – Is that something that you have talked to coaches about in the past, or something coaches have talked to your Dad (St. Mark’s Head Coach Dave Lubick) about?

Nate Lubick – Well most of the schools say they see me as a 3 because of the way that I can shoot it.  But really what it comes down to is until that day comes when I get to the next level I’m likely to continue to see time at both the 3 and the 4, so I just need to show I can be versatile defensively.

NERR – How about the upcoming season, what are your expectations for your St. Mark’s team?

Nate Lubick – I think we have a chance to be real good.

NERR – Is there one particular area that you think will be crucial to your success?

Nate Lubick – Well in our workout Dave [Johnson] went down with a broken wrist.  He is going to be out 5 or 6 weeks I think.  But he is going to be very important for us.  He’s really good.  I think he’ll be far and away one of the best point guards in New England.  So having someone like him who can really push the ball and get us out on fast breaks will be very important.  Plus the way we rebound and defend will obviously be important as well.

NERR – Well Nate, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today and best of luck in the upcoming season.

Nate Lubick – Thank you.
