New Hampton Forward Picks Columbia

Yesterday we told you that John Daniels was headed to Columbia this weekend for an official visit.  Well less than 24 hours later Daniels is now a part of the Lions program, as he made a verbal commitment on Saturday.

“Columbia was one of the first schools to recruit John.  Here we are towards the end of April and it is great to see the process work out,” said New Hampton head coach Peter Hutchins.  “Everyone is excited for John.”

Daniels is a bit of a role player extraordinaire, meaning that he helps his team win in so many different ways, without necessarily needing to score a lot of points.

He has a great blend of physical strength, toughness, and athleticism, which helps to make him an excellent rebounder and finisher around the basket.  He’s also a tireless worker, who never takes a possession off.  But you can’t fall asleep on him on the offensive end either, as he is also very skilled and capable of knocking down shots all the way out to the three-point line.

When you consider all of those things that Daniels has going for him, it’s not hard to figure out why his stock has been quickly on the rise since arriving at New Hampton this year.

But despite seeing interest from higher level schools throughout the year, Daniels always made academics his biggest priority.  Consequently, his decision to head to the Ivy League doesn’t come as too much of a surprise.

Under Hutchins, the New Hampton School is quickly developing a little bit of a niche in producing high academic talent.  In fact, Daniels is the third player to go Ivy in the two years that Hutchins has been at the helm of the program.
