Tilton Wins Battle for Canty

When word got out that Ryan Canty was considering a move to prep school to repeat his junior year, it wasn’t hard to predict that he’d pick up plenty of interest from local programs.  Ultimately, Canty did decide to make a move and selected to transfer to the Tilton School next year where he will repeat his junior year. 

Canty is in the midst of a bit of a breakout season with the Mass Rivals as he has emerged as a definite scholarship prospect.  He clearly has all the physical tools with great size (6’9”), strength, and athleticism.  He’s already proven himself to be a game changer with his rebounding prowess and ability to block shots on the defensive end.  Offensively, he’s at his best around the basket where he dunks just about everything, both by running the floor in transition and also by powering through contact in the half court. 

The 6’9” big man will join a Tilton team again expected to be among the best in class B as they return Gerard Coleman, Alex Kershaw, Georges Niang, and Sam Malone while also adding local products George Tsougranis and Alex Stoyle.

Winchendon Lands Waterbury Duo

What had been rumored for many months was recently confirmed…Anthony Ireland will be heading to the Winchendon School next season as a post-graduate.  Ireland won’t be the only post-graduate from Waterbury, Connecticut on Winchendon’s roster next season as Sacred Heart senior Joe Bozzuto will also be making the trip. 

Going to high school in the same town isn’t the only similarity between these two products as both come from winning pedigrees.  Ireland was instrumental in Crosby’s state championship in 2008 and even more crucial in the team’s run back to this year’s final, before ultimately falling to Windsor.  Bozzuto’s Sacred Heart team earned championship gold this March as they captured the class M title with a win over Bloomfield. 

Ireland established himself as one of the top point guards in Connecticut during his senior season.  Not only did he put up ridiculous scoring numbers, but he showed that he was capable of putting his team on his back down the stretch.  Perhaps no shot was bigger in the CIAC this year than his buzzer beater to defeat Hillhouse in the quarter-finals of the state tournament. 

Bozzuto had the opposite role, on a team with a star like Josh Turner along with other major scorer’s like Cory Andrews and Effron Ellison, Bozzuto was the ultimate team player who did whatever was needed for his team to get the win.  He played out of position at the power forward spot all year long while still being among the team leaders in scoring, assists, and rebounds.  Look for him to surprise some people next year, especially with his lethal three-point shot. 

Fay Brothers & Sherwood Heading to Brimmer & May

Despite losing do-it-all forward Kyle Casey, Brimmer & May still hopes to be a contender in class B next season.  And while no single player will be able to replace the Harvard bound star, they’ve added a nice trio that will help to soften the blow. 

The Fay brothers will both be transferring from Lynn Classical High School and reclassifying upon entering Brimmer & May.  Jared will be repeating his junior year and Jake his freshman year.  Both are very skilled, and exceptionally good long distance shooters, who should thrive in Brimmer’s attack. 

Also joining the mix will be Chris Sherwood, an extremely athletic 6’3” swingman.  Sherwood is at his best in the open floor where he can finish explosively above the rim and even has the skill to handle the ball some in the open court.  His addition will no doubt help to offset the loss of Casey’s athletic impact on the team. 

Boyatsis to Cheshire Academy

Dover High School’s John Boyatsis has opted to do a post-graduate season at Cheshire Academy.  Boyatsis was a consistent scorer for Dover this year who showed he could put the ball in the basket both inside and out as he led his team to a 10-8 record on the season. 

Boyatsis will join another New England product in 6’7” Jason Chornyei in Cheshire’s line-up next season.  Chornyei is a Rhode Island native who was a senior last year at the New Hampton School in New Hampshire, where he earned a roster spot on the school’s Class A roster. 

Both Boyatsis and Chornyei should be valuable additions to head coach Kevin Kehoe’s line-up.  But without question the most notable addition will be that of Jamel Fields, a 6’2” guard from Albany, New York who has already committed to the University of Fairfield.
