McGuirl Heading to Big 12

East Catholic and Connecticut Basketball Club guard Mike McGuirl was one of New England's biggest stock-risers this summer, specifically in the last week of July when he picked up scholarship offers by the handfuls at AAU nationals.

Kansas State was just one of the schools to offer him that week, albeit the first high-major, and on Sunday, following an official visit to their campus, McGuirl announced that he was committing to the Wildcats and heading to the Big 12.

While McGuirl's recruitment went to new levels during the AAU season, perhaps his biggest accomplishments have come during the high school season so far. He averaged 19 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks per game as a junior (per the New Haven Register) despite playing most of the season with a face mask. He earned both all-conference and all-state honors while helping East Catholic to their second state championship during his three year career.

This season, McGuirl is expected to be one of the very best players in the entire CIAC while leading an East team that is widely projected to again be among the top contenders in the state.

Moving forward, one of the most intriguing things about McGuirl to college coaches was that he was already a three range scoring threat yet still had his best basketball in front of him. He owns a pretty shooting stroke that is both quick and compact as well as equally good off the catch or the dribble. Combine that with good athleticism at the rim, a reported strong work ethic and the fact that he continues to improve and evolve on a consistent basis and his future is clearly a bright one.
