Maduegbunam Following Chambers to Penn State

When former Boston University head coach Pat Chambers left to take over at Penn State, virtually everyone in Boston was disappointed, everyone except Akosa Maduegbunam that is. 

Maduegbunam had been priority 1A for Chambers for several months, and while the six-foot-three swingman had definitely developed a close relationship with the staff, he wasn’t sure he wanted to go to college so close to his Charlestown home. 

“I always knew I wanted to go out of state,” Maduegbunam told the New England Recruiting Report, “so I almost thought it was a miracle when I heard that Pat Chambers was moving to Penn State.” 

Maduegbunam started his high school career at Cushing Academy but didn’t really begin to assert himself until arriving back at Charlestown two years ago. 

While his scholarship offers had come primarily from low to mid-major programs to this point, he had the look of a player who could be poised for a breakout this summer given his high level athleticism and shot-making ability. 

No one had watched his development closer over the last two years than Chambers, and the new Penn State coach clearly wanted to be ahead of the curve heading into the summer. 

So, less than a week before the live period is set to begin, Maduegbunam excepted a scholarship offer from the Nittany Lions and made a verbal commitment. 

“I liked being under the radar,” Maduegbunam said.  “I always knew I was a high-major kid and Pat Chambers knew it too.” 

Maduegbunam will complete his high school career at the Winchendon School next year and will continue to run with Expressions Elite squad throughout the upcoming summer.
