MAC Earns Silver in Orlando
The Maine Athletic Club, or MAC as they have come to be known, earned medals at the 11th grade AAU Silver Super Showcase by winning the silver bracket with a cumulative record of 6-1 on the week.
After coming out of pool play with a 2-1 record (with their lone loss coming to the eventual gold bracket champions, Virginia Squires), MAC opened bracket play with a 62-55 win over the South Florida Celtics and followed that up with another close battle with a local Florida squad as they held off Brevard Elite 72-68.
The semifinals brought a match-up with a Team Jersey Elite squad who MAC had seen earlier in the year at both the Northeast Hoops Festival as well as the Memorial Day Super 16 Showcase. They advanced to the finals with a 56-50 win.
They found themselves matched up against a tough Maryland’s Finest squad in the final, and were able to establish a 25-19 lead by halftime. The second half was a back and forth affair for all 16 minutes with MAC eventually securing the victory behind a big three-point play from Mike McDevitt, some critical defensive stops, and equally important free-throw shooting.
Rising junior swingman Kyle Bouchard led a balanced offensive attack with 13 points while Zach Gilpin, who only recently returned from injury, scored 12. McDevitt added 11 points along with a team high 7 rebounds while Andrew Middleton played an important role off the bench with 7 points and 6 rebounds.
