Leyte Leaves for UNCG in ‘19

New Hampton School and Expressions Elite big man Bas Leyte made a verbal commitment to UNC Greensboro on Monday and is making the move right away as he'll return to his original class of 2019 in order to join UNCG next season.

Leyte is a native of the Netherlands who arrived at New Hampton School in the fall of 2017 as a member of the 2019 class, before briefly reclassifying to 2020.

He ran with Expressions Elite in the 2018 Nike EYBL and was starring for them again this spring.

At 6-foot-9 he has good size, touch, and hands to compliment an advanced skill set and very high basketball I.Q. Leyte, who only recently turned 18, has also made great strides with his conditioning and athleticism within the last year.

UNCG head coach Wes Miller is a New Hampton School alum who led his team to program records in each of the last two seasons with 27 wins in 2017-18 and 29 wins in 2018-19. He and his staff have made it a priority to recruit prep schools, and New England prep schools in particular, with this year's roster featuring both Francis Alonso (Cushing) and Malik Massey (New Hampton).

"We are thrilled that Bas has decided to join former Husky Wes Miller at UNC Greensboro," NHS head coach Nick Whitmore told NERR. "Bas is a high character leader who will fit perfectly with Coach Miller's system and will continue the culture of excellence in Greensboro."

Leyte, who held numerous mid-major offers with growing high-major interest, should be able to make an immediate impact for the Spartans and have a chance to be a big part of their future.
