Hughes is a Terrier
Yesterday, Dexter Southfield and Middlesex Magic 2025 wing Sam Hughes announced his commitment to the Boston University Terriers.
For Hughes, he gets to take his game to the Division One level, but gets to do so close to his hometown of Needham.
For most of his high school career, he has played NEPSAC Class A ball, but prior to that he was with the Needham Rockets, where he started on varsity as a freshman.
Along with current incoming NYU freshman Henry Bickford, Hughes played a big role in leading the Rockets to the Elite Eight of the MIAA tournament in March 2022.
After his freshman year at Needham, Hughes transferred just 15 minutes away to Dexter Southfield, where he has spent the past two seasons.
At Dexter Southfield, he has made an All-NEPSAC team and recently surpassed the 1,000 point mark in impressive fashion dropping 29 points in a January 15th victory.
This summer he posted 6.1 ppg on 36% from beyond the three-point line for the Middlesex Magic 17U squad.
Middlesex Magic Program Director and National Team coach had great things to say about the Terriers commit: “Sam is one of the most talented and athletic players I've coached in a really long time. His ability to join our program and immediately fit in to everything that Middlesex Magic is about was absolutely amazing.”
Crotty added, “He was a really key component to a team that was 25-6 and 15-4 on Under Armour, even though he probably could've been the leading score on a number of teams.”
The 6’6 wing brings a fluid release on the ball with size and defensive versatility to match. His consistent two-way ability is expected to translate seamlessly to the Patriot League.
When asked about his decision to commit to Boston University, Hughes had great things to say about their leader: “Coach Jones was such a great person to my family and I. He started recruiting me early on so we were able to build a very good relationship,” He said about BU Head Coach, Joe Jones.
He went on to say more good things about the coaching staff, “[Coach Jones] really believed in my game and he put a lot of time into showing me how I would fit into the play style of the team. Coach Quinn was also great to me as I have a great relationship with him.”
Choosing BU for its basketball program and campus atmosphere was an easy decision for Hughes: “I loved everything about the team and all of the players on the team. They all loved BU and none of them were transferring which is very rare nowadays.”
With the short commute from Needham to Boston, Hughes now has the opportunity to showcase his talents in front of familiar faces while with the Terriers.
