Touted as a top freshman in Maine, point forward Jesse Matthews is scoring in double-figures and impacting the game in a wide variety of ways as one of the feature-players for Cheverus High School. The Stags are currently 6-6 on the year and looking to make a run in the second half of the season.
While his ability was certainly on display on numerous occasions during the first part of the season, talented freshman guard Cody Graham has absolutely exploded in the past few games for Portsmouth HS, scoring 25 for the Clippers in a win over Windham HS, then followed that up by scoring 21 in a win over St. Thomas Aquinas, and then had a game-high 17 last night in a win last night over Southegan HS. The Clippers are 6-1 and in hot-pursuit of a second consecutive state-championship in New Hampshire.
Londonderry High School has had a very strong start to the season as they are 7-1 and playing a dangerous brand of ball in that they have numerous guys who can step up and lead the charge on any given night. A trio of freshmen who are getting in on the action for the Lancers are point guard Cole Britting along with forwards Matt Corey and Dakota Bertrand. Top freshmen trio in New Hampshire along with one of top trios overall in New England.
Rice Memorial High School in Burlington has won back-back-back D1 Vermont State Championships and they have every intention of making it a 3-peat in 2015. They have gotten off to 9-1 start and have the best player in the state in Kendrick Gray, a smooth-stroke scorer who's a big-time prospect. They also have a nice support cast, which includes a talented freshman guard in Elliot Nelson, who had a very good showing at last year's Junior Elite 75. Nelson has has gotten into double-figures on multiple occasion and has played a composed floor-game for the Green Knights thus far this season.
Freshman guard Taylor Schildroth has introduced himself to the party in a hurry at George Stevens Academy, where he is doing a great job of distributing and scoring the basketball for the 10-3 Eagles. He's scored 20+ points on numerous occasions and has established himself as one of the top young guards in Maine.
Machias Memorial High School 6'6 freshman big man Jacob Godfrey is making major-noise for the 10-3 Bulldogs. He is putting up double-double type numbers and has a season-high of 24. Look for Godfrey's production to continue as Machias looks to make a run in the Maine State Tournament.
Freshmen guards Elijah Ramos an Timmy Holt are both getting significant minutes on the varsity team and playing well off the bench for the Wheeler School in Rhode Island. The Warriors are 9-2 and currently ranked #1 in NEPSAC Class C based on MaxPreps computer rankings.
Great article in the Providence Journal by legendary sportswriter Bill Reynolds on Portsmouth High School (RI) freshman guard Chris Herren Jr., who's been impressive thus far on the season for the Patriots, "averaging roughly 17 points a game, with several games over 25."
