HoopRootz Freshmen Focus: Recent Wing Standouts

We've had a chance to see a ton of freshmen talent over the past few weeks; last weekend at the Zero Gravity Massachusetts State Championship and this past weekend at the NERR Super 16 Showcase. Here's a look at some wings who've caught our eye.

Cole Swider - BABC Gold - Highly-dangerous trigger-man shoots the ball with supreme-confidence and has the size to employ his stroke up over the top of the defense with comfort. Also registers buckets at the basket and from the mid-range off the drive while getting buckets in transition and competing on the glass. Put up big numbers leading the BABC scoring-attack at ZG Mass States.

Nyzair Rountree - Expressions Elite - Long-stride wing-athlete looked good in his return from injury the last couple of weeks at the Zero Gravity Massachusetts State Championship and this past weekend at the NERR Super 16 Showcase; making an assortment of explosively athletic plays while getting is rhythm, back.

Shamir Johnson - CT Select - Long-range guard with quick-strike closing-speed looked very good scoring the basketball at the NERR Super 16; getting buckets from multiple levels in an increased variety of situations while making high-altitude plays on the glass and defensively.

Mekhi Warren - Boston Spartans - Lengthy long-stride small forward with athleticism showed some high-level flashes at ZG Mass States for the Boston Spartans; getting to the basket from the arc in a flash off the one-dribble drive, creating space off the bounce, finishing and grabbing rebounds above the rim, and knocking down perimeter shots in a variety of situations. Warren has a lot of potential as a prospect.

Tyrone McCray - BABC Black - After coming up the middle-school ranks playing primarily on the interior, McCray is making a nice transition to having his base of operation out on the perimeter. Has looked good thing spring creating offense and making shots while showing the ability to handle efficiently in the open-floor and against pressure.

Chad Peterson - New England Playaz - Shot-making small forward spreads the floor with his long-distance shooting ability and will take the ball hard to the basket to score the ball when a defensive crease is there.

Jose Monteiro - BOS - Versatile-athletic wing-guard was a standout at ZG Mass States; guarding multiple positions and coming up with plays on the defensive end while scoring in bunches from behind the arc and the mid-range. Had a entertaining series of dunks over the course of the weekend.

William Antrum - Expressions Elite - Crafty wing-guard uses his wide-frame to consistently create space between ball and defender off the bounce. Has a nice touch finishing in a variety of situations off the drive and will also knock down perimeter shots.

Mccarthy Akinkuoye - BOS - Averaged a double double over the course of the weekend at the NERR Super 16; battling on the glass at both ends against bigger players while capitalizing from a patient approach at the offensive end as he got buckets efficiently from the mid-range and around the basket.
