Hanna, who ran with the Middlesex Magic on the grassroots circuit, had a decorated high school career at Catholic Memorial, helping to lead the team to the 2015 MIAA state championship and the 2016 South Sectional championship. His list of personal accolades was no less impressive as he was named Boston Herald Dream Team, ESPN Boston All-State First Team, Catholic Conference MVP, and Boston Globe Player of the Year.
He’s had to embrace more of a complimentary role in his post-grad season as he’s joined a Vermont Academy roster that is deep with division I caliber, and high-major caliber, talent. Nonetheless, he’s still proven himself valuable in the Wildcats quest to repeat as NEPSAC Class AA champions.
"In a Vermont Academy program full of impressive student-athletes, Matt Hanna still manages to stand out. He does this with his preparation, maturity, and passion for the game of basketball,” Vermont Academy head coach Alex Popp said. “He's the type of player that has the positive energy of Christmas morning during each and every practice. I've been around basketball for a very long time as a player and as a coach and I find this extremely rare. We are anticipating that Hanna is going to have a storied college basketball career while receiving a first class education. We couldn't be happier for Matt and his family."
Hanna is the sixth member of Vermont Academy’s 2017 class to commit to a college basketball program as he joins teammates who had previously committed to the likes of Louisville, Butler, VCU, Vermont, and Jacksonville.
