Get Spellman on ESPN OTL; #AllForJoey
In what is quickly become one of the most heartfelt sports stories of the year, social media in the greater Boston area and beyond is quickly rallying around the Cardinal Spellman basketball team in their quest to win a state championship in honor of their former teammate and 2012 graduate, Joey Glynn, who passed away unexpectedly last spring.
On Tuesday night, Spellman was down double figures midway through the fourth quarter in the Division III Eastern Massachusetts Finals until the “All for Joey” chant broke out in the crowd of the TD Garden. Spellman came storming back to force overtime, ultimately winning the game 51-44 and advance to the state championship game.
Following the game, the Cardinal Spellman fans broke into a new chant, “Thank You Joey.”
John Botelho has the full game recap on ESPN Boston.
Glynn starred at Cardinal Spellman, scoring over 1,000 career points and earning a scholarship to division II Bentley before tragically passing away last spring after collapsing during a pick-up game.
Four of Cardinal Spellman’s current starters played with Glynn as underclassmen and have consequently dedicated their season to him. They’ve now overcome double figure deficits in the fourth quarter of each of their last two state tournament games.
Here are some of the tweets from Spellman's state tournament run:
Joey Glynn played his final HS game here at Taunton High 2 years ago. Rory Donovan pointed to Glynn's father during warmups. Nodded back
